When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.” (John 6:16-18)

Jesus has fed the people, the disciples have gathered the leftovers, and now, Jesus makes it clear it is time for everyone to go to their homes—Everyone but his disciples. It is evening, and although navigation by the stars was commonplace, on this night those stars were not showing. There was a storm brewing which was very common on the Sea of Galilee.

Do you ever wonder why Jesus would have sent the disciples out onto the lake in the first place? This was Jesus we’re talking about…He would certainly have known a storm was coming. He is the all-knowing, all-seeing Son of God. He commands the weather with just the sound of his voice.

So why not just tell the disciples to spend the night on shore with Him? If he wanted to be alone, he certainly could have walked away from them and gone up into the hills. But He chose not to—Jesus’ command for them was to return by boat to the other shore. Join us this week at Sedona United Methodist Church as Rev.
