We often judge people by one mistake. We never let them forget it—And so often, we never let the world forget it either. When we think of David, we think of his sin. We forget what a great man he was despite his failure. When we think of Jacob, we think of how he stole his brother’s birthright. In Peter, we remember his denial. Shakespeare said, “The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones.”

Most of us would consider it an insult to be compared with the disciple known as Thomas.  We so often only look at Thomas’ inability to believe in the risen Christ.  The truth is, we know very little else about him.  But we are very familiar with the story that he was the man who doubted that Jesus arose from the dead.  In fact, we seldom refer to him as the Apostle Thomas.  Instead we have long since renamed him.  We have given him a new first name.  We call him “Doubting,” “Doubting Thomas.”

In fact, if we are honest with ourselves, many of us are a lot like Thomas, aren’t we?  Unless we see something with our own eyes or hold it in our own hands—We cannot believe something unless we see it, touch it.  Yet isn’t that the heart of what the Gospel is all about: Faith!  Hope!  Ours is a faith that comes not from seeing, but from experiencing it in our hearts. Join us this week at Sedona United Methodist Church as the Rev. Fred Mast shares an inspired message entitled “Have You Seen Jesus My Lord”.
