This week we look at one of the most detailed and insightful accounts of Jesus’ reappearances after His resurrection. The gospel of Luke is the only one of the four writers to share this important story—It is a story that reveals to us not only something about who we are, but how Jesus opens our eyes to see Him for who He is and how we can come to know Him better.
The journey to Emmaus is both a literal and a deeply spiritual journey. It recounts the story of two of Jesus’ disciples who, after the crucifixion and resurrection take a seven-mile walk from Jerusalem to their home village of Emmaus. It is a journey that takes them from not recognizing Jesus, to opening their eyes to what the Scripture promises about Him—Recognizing Him for who He is, and with excitement and anticipation sharing their witness to all who would listen.
This two-hour plus walk to Emmaus must have seemed like mere minutes. The two disciples could feel the defeat and deep sorrow within their hearts change into hope and faith as the “stranger” explained that His death was actually a part of God’s greater plan of salvation.
When fear, trepidation and defeat dominate our thoughts, Jesus walks with us and points us to God’s Word in the scriptures that promises us that we are God’s dearly loved children and that he will stand by us through thick and thin, good times and bad. He turns our fear into hope and our hope into joy. Join us this week at Sedona United Methodist Church as the Rev. Fred Mast shares an inspirational hope filled message entitled “A Walk to Remember”.
