“Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His loving kindness is everlasting.” (Psalm 136:1)

This phrase is one of the most famous in the whole Bible. The first time we see it in Bible history is in 1 Chronicles chapter 16, when King David is bringing up the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. They sang and praised and thanked God, and we read in verse 34 “O give thanks to the LORD for He is good; for His loving kindness is everlasting.” We find this same phrase near the end of Psalm 100, where it tells us to “enter His gates with thanksgiving… for the LORD is good; His loving kindness is everlasting.”

From this time forward, that phrase “For His loving kindness is everlasting” becomes one of the most-used worship phrases in the Bible. Psalm 136 begins with Thanksgiving, and it ends with Thanksgiving. It begins, “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good”, and it ends: “Give thanks to the God of heaven, for His loving kindness is everlasting.” And in between it gives us a multitude of reasons to give God our thanksgiving. Join us this week at Sedona United Methodist Church as we give our great God our thanks for the blessings God provides and the Rev. Fred Mast brings a very special Thanksgiving message entitled, “God is Good—All the Time!”.
