Someone once said—“If we want to meet a miracle, we must treat it as a masterpiece of love, not as a hypothesis to shoot full of holes.”
Join us for worship this week as Pastor Fred returns and begins a series of sermons based on the miracles of Jesus. This week we begin in the Gospel of John, chapter 2, as Jesus shows up at a wedding party, and not only ends up being the life of the party—but literally saves the party and the bride’s father from great humiliation.
This is the first of many miracles Jesus will perform during his three-year ministry and it is a test case for the miracles that will follow—it’s one thing to turn water into wine, after all many trained magicians or chemists could do a simple task like turning water into wine—a little sleight of hand, or a simple chemical reaction, and bingo! you have wine. But we find this is not just ordinary wine. It is the finest wine they had ever tasted.
Surely, the Master of Miracles would start by moving a mountain, or some other major miracle. Why a seemingly simple science experiment? Wouldn’t modern day promotional guru’s, had they been in Jesus’ ear, would certainly be begging for Jesus to begin with a spectacular healing at a leaper colony? We can almost hear the snickers and the critics screaming, “Your career will never go anywhere—you’ll never be anybody!” But we will find out there is much more to this story. We certainly find the true importance of this first miracle—it is a test case, a foundational moment in history and Jesus’ ministry. We are challenged to understand, to believe, to not limit God’s ability to less than that of ordinary people. Come and join in the journey as we once again see the power and the glory of the one we call Jesus—the Christ.
