“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:5) The question that Jesus poses to his disciples at first glance is rather simple to answer–Who do you say that I am? You are Jesus, of course! But a “name” rarely is adequate enough to sum up “who we are.” A name at best identifies us but falls woefully short at getting at who we are and what we are all about. The question to His disciples was much more complex than this seemingly innocent question from Jesus “Who do you say I am? Earlier in this exchange, Jesus had warmed up the disciples by giving them an easier question–what do people/others say about me? Our sense is that the first question was merely asked to get to the heart of what Jesus wanted to hear from his disciples then (over 2,000 yrs ago) and what Jesus hopes to hear from his disciples/followers in every generation including you and me this day–Who do you say that I am? In fact, this is perhaps the most crucial question facing the church today. Join us this week as Pastor Fred Mast brings the third message in a sermon series entitled, “Who Do You Say That I Am?- A Question That Could Change Your Life.”
