PRAYERS & SQUARES

THE PRAYER QUILT MINISTRY

Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of a hand-made quilt with the gift of prayer for someone in need. The essence of the ministry is in the prayers offered for the recipient.

A prayer quilt is made with love and tied with prayers. Each knot tied into the quilt represents a prayer that is offered specifically for someone in need of those prayers. We have a group of volunteers who lovingly sew the quilts; our pastor presents the quilt during our worship service; the quilt is available after the service and our congregation offers a prayer for the recipient and ties a knot.

We hope our quilts sewn with love and tied with prayers are a source of comfort and strength for each recipient.

ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

For the past twelve years, under the leadership of Suzie Dunn, our ESOL group has made their home in our Fellowship Hall each Tuesday evening from 6 – 7:30 pm. A group of volunteers provide English language instruction in a one-on-one format for our community members wanting to learn English.

VOLUNTEERS IN MISSIONS (VIM)

Members of our congregation organize volunteers from Sedona and the Verde Valley to respond to a variety of needs in the U.S. and Mexico. Aid is provided in the form of supplies and/or physical work in the disaster area. Recent VIM projects included Gulfport, Mississippi, following Hurricane Katrina and Greensburg, Kansas, following their devastating tornado.

UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF (UMCOR)

UMCOR is a worldwide relief organization run by the global United Methodist Church. Because Methodist churches all over the world pay for the administration of UMCOR through their “One Great Hour of Sharing” 100% of disaster relief goes directly to the victims of any catastrophe. UMCOR is often among the first relief organizations to arrive at the site of a disaster and also among the last to leave.

The Sedona UMC is proud to be part of the UMCOR project.
