“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”—John 14:6. The city of Jerusalem was bustling with activity because Passover had arrived, and pilgrims were flowing into the city. The Jewish leaders were stirred up and looking for cause to arrest Jesus. This was the day when tears, and cries of pain would flow from Gethsemane—On this day the betrayal of Judas and the denial of Peter would be more painful for Jesus than the insults or the beatings of the soldiers.
The disciples were disheartened, but Jesus urged them to trust in him and to lift their eyes to behold the coming glories of heaven. He was preparing them for the journey that lie ahead for him and all of them. Thomas said in confusion and doubt, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” To which Jesus gently responded, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus is not simply one way among many; he is the only way. Jesus is not just a truth; he is the only truth. And Jesus is the only life that truly satisfies the heart and soul.
