Paul, undoubtedly the greatest missionary of the early Christian Church, brought forth God’s message and was received by some with great joy, yet by others ridiculed and made fun of. Like the messenger, the gospel message often acts like a double-edged sword. It can function like a surgical scalpel bringing deliverance or cut like a knife bringing devastation. All of this becomes pointedly clear on the Day of Pentecost.

When the Holy Spirit illuminates a divine presence through wind, fire, and speaking in different tongues about the great things God has done—The writer of Luke shares the presence of two very different reactions that day—”amazement and great wonder” and “we’re just not buying this, ‘They have had too much wine’!” In this world, there are seekers and there are scoffers.

Many have tried and many have failed to explain exactly what occur that day when thousands turned their attention away from the things of this world and gave their lives to Jesus Christ. And why didn’t more convert—Why don’t more hear the truth and receive the gift today?

God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will proclaim my message.’” (Acts 2:17-18) Join us this week at Sedona United Methodist Church as we celebrate “Pentecost”, the birthday of the Christian Church as the Rev.
