Christ’s sermon on the mount covers virtually every area of godly living and right thinking. Unlike the Mosaic Law, it is not a list of rules and regulations for us to follow. It is also not a list of instructions on the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ of everyday living. Jesus’ sermon on the mount was a new form of teaching, authoritative in that it laid out Godly principles for life and living—Principles that could be applied to every facet of life and relevant in every situation we might face.
Jesus had come to the lost sheep of Israel as the Messiah and King of the Jews. He came to set up God’s kingdom among the people of earth. Jesus’ instructions set a new standard that would be required of all the people of God—”Whatever you want others to do unto you, do also the same for them”—Christ’s golden rule for His followers which completely embraced the entire teachings of the Mosaic Law and all the Prophets.
Jesus was teaching the people that it is not what you DO that will get you membership into His kingdom but what you genuinely BELIEVE in your heart. It is not what you DO that earns you salvation, but In Whom you believe. Salvation is not something you can earn—It is only received as a gift from God. Jesus was teaching that redemption from the trappings of this world could only be overcome by the freedom of Christ’s millennial kingdom. And this was only made possible in discovering and living in a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ—In all ways, in all things, and at all times.
