The baptism of Jesus Christ is one of the truly epochal events within the Gospel records. It is chronicled by the synoptic writers in a total of only ten verses (five in Matthew, three in Mark, and two in Luke), and yet it is pivotal in that it signals the commencement of the Lord’s preaching ministry.

By the time the Lord arrived for His baptism, John the Baptist had been preaching for about six months. Moving up and down the Jordan valley, from the north to the south, John baptized the multitudes who were flooding out of Judea and Jerusalem to hear his message preparing the way of the coming Messiah. John’s message was a message of judgment, a message of wrath, and of fiery judgment. He warned all who would listen to prepare to meet the Messiah and to repent in order to enter into His Kingdom.

On a warm summer day thought to be around the year 26 A.D., among these crowds who are flocking to John for this “sinner’s baptism”, is Jesus. This is the only time recorded in the New Testament when we ever hear of Jesus and John being together – the only time. John the Baptist is well known in the land of Israel for this ministry. Everybody knows that his baptism is a baptism for repentance and the confession of sin to escape divine judgment. And here comes Jesus, the one without sin, the one John has been speaking of – asking John to baptize Him. “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15)
