IMG_1024“That very same day”—Their journey began in the early afternoon after they had experienced the resurrection and shared together with many others the unbelievable events of that first Easter morning. Cleopas and another disciple still worked up and talking about all they had witnessed were joined by Jesus himself. Although these two disciples knew who Jesus was, they did not recognize Him as they met him on this dusty dirt road. They knew a lot about Him. They had been witnesses to all those things that had happened in Jerusalem. They had heard, no doubt, on many occasions of the things Jesus had testified about Himself. Yet, they were not able to recognize Jesus when they met Him on this journey to a village about 7 miles from Jerusalem. It is one of the most vivid and insightful accounts of our Lord’s appearances after His resurrection—A story that reveals to us not only something about who we are, but more importantly how Jesus has the ability to open our eyes to see Him for who He truly is.

This journey to Emmaus is both a literal and a spiritual journey—life changing. On one hand it recounts the story of two disciples who, after the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord, walk these seven long miles to their home village of Emmaus. On the other hand, it outlines for us the journey that we all take—from not even recognizing Jesus, to beginning to gain an understanding of what the Scripture says about Him, to recognizing Him for who He is—finally moving us to sharing our witness of what we have experienced. Join the journey this week at Sedona UMC as Rev. Fred Mast brings a message entitled “He Walks With Me” based on Luke’s very familiar account of the “Walk to Emmaus”. We enter the spirit of worship at 9:30am featuring beautiful hymns, touching times of prayer and devotion, and passionate life changing messages that will bring you closer in your relationship with Jesus Christ.
