After Jonah stopped playing and fussing with the whale, after he stopped running the opposite way from the Lord, he heard from God again. He was pretty sure God had forgotten about him, but that was not the case. “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” Jonah decided to listen this time though he wasn’t too happy about it, but the people of that city heard Jonah and repented. Jonah was impressed and amazed. This theme persists in many Bible stories. People are called and some need to hear two and three times. Some, like fishermen Simon and Andrew needed only to be told once. They immediately left their livelihood and their families to follow this man, Jesus of Nazareth. We are not asked to leave our homes or our work or our families, yet we have moments like Jonah when we are just hoping God has moved on, gone to find some other more willing soul to spread the Word, to help the poor, to follow what is good and right.
