Have you ever acknowledged that something important to you is a lost cause? Perhaps it’s a relationship gone bad, or a dream that’s slipped out of your reach. You may often think with regret of things from the past that you’ve lost. You may visit the doctor and hear the very news you didn’t want to hear. Thousands of years ago, the people of Israel suffered in exile in Babylon, their God-given dream of a strong nation devastated by conquering foreign armies. In the midst of despair, the prophet Ezekiel shares a word of hope: “Oh my people, I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live!” When we’re tempted to give up, we’re reminded that the Spirit of God is moving in our lives and in the world, bringing back to life the future we once dreamed of.
