We are neighbors, but often we don’t know one another. We pass by one another all the time–on the road, in the aisle at the grocery store, taking an evening walk. Sometimes we smile and say hello; other times we’re too absorbed in our own lives to notice one another. Sometimes we meet a neighbor and make a friend. Sometimes we notice something strange about a neighbor and walk quickly away. Other times we’re afraid of a neighbor and walk even more quickly away. Sometimes a neighbor doesn’t fit our criteria of acceptability, and we treat them as an enemy.
In Luke 10:27-28, we’re commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves, but sometimes we really don’t want to. People of faith are called to build relationships with neighbors, turning strangers and enemies into friends, that we might share the love of Christ with them.
